Life After Rehab
Last summer, in our Above & Beyond post about one of our dedicated staff members, Resident Monitor (RM) Nicholas who was voluntarily spending her downtime helping recent Turning Point graduates find permanent employment, as they prepared to reenter society.
Recently, we checked in with RM Nicholas and our clients to find out how their employment experiences have been going. A couple of them were open to sharing their feedback with us. Their updates, feedback from their employers, and RM Nicholas’ sentiments are shared below.
CLIENT A:
What the job consists of.
One of our clients is currently employed as a Busser (otherwise known as busboy) at a busy hotel restaurant. His daily duties can include preparing all silverware and utensils before service begins, setting tables, refilling soft drinks, juice and water, serving food, clearing tables and assisting the waiting staff wherever needed.
How the job compares to jobs held in the past and/or former lifestyle?
The client told our team that he hadn’t worked a steady job in a long time. He shared that it makes him feel really good about himself to be employed. He has found that he much prefers keeping busy.
How has it been starting a new job while still living at Turning Point?
Direct Client Quote: “I feel good about working and living at TPF because it has helped me remain focused. It also helped me remain on the right path so I can see things differently. I feel proud my life is getting better.”
Now that you are reentering society, how have you been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic?
The client shared that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has made him significantly more grateful for life. It has also made him much more vigilant about maintaining good hand-hygiene and overall cleanliness.
What your job is saying about you!
Each month, RM Nicholas follows up with employers to find out how our clients are working out on the job.
She shared that this client’s employer has often boasted on how the excellent job he is doing and how he is so vital to the team. We are excited to share that this client has since returned home and has been doing well. He has also been contracted to continue on with his employer for the next year!
CLIENT B:
What the job consists of.
Another of our clients is working as a Pool Attendant at a prominent hotel. As such, his duties may include setting up furniture and equipment, conducting routine pool inspections, greeting, assisting, and serving refreshments to guests, providing freshly laundered linen, and ensuring that the swimming pool area is neat and organized.
How the job compares to jobs held in the past and/or former lifestyle?
The client shared that he thinks it is good to have a job that is structured. He is really happy to be working there and likes being in a different atmosphere.”
How has it been starting a new job while still living at Turning Point?
Direct Client Quote: “ I feel good about working and living at TPF. It keeps me out of trouble and helps me focus on the bigger picture of life.”
Now that you are reentering society, how have you been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic?
The client shared that COVID-19 has helped him to be more aware of his surroundings. And it has reminded him to be consistent about cleanliness.
What your job is saying about you!
After each month of the client’s trial period on the job, RM Nicholas follows up with employers to find out how our clients are doing as employees.
RM Nicholas told us that this client’s supervisor had only positive words to speak about him. He was celebrated for doing excellent work and for being a fast learner. His employers are both pleased and proud of his work so far and they look forward to him continuing to keep it up.
RM Nicholas stated that “The guys have come a long way. I am really proud of how they took the responsibility of working seriously. They went in and did more than what was required of them. I’m already seeing positive changes in their behavior and attitude. I am very proud that I can be a part of their life recovery.”
It is no small thing when our clients stay the course, seeking to lead productive and positive lives even after reentering into society. We appreciate their dedication and we are grateful to our staff members for their commitment to helping our clients realize positive change in their lives.
